Dry van trailers are the most common type of truck trailer used in the industry. A dry van trailer is a basic trailer that looks like a long rectangular box with doors located at the rear for loading and unloading the freight. The Federal Department of Transportation estimates that there are over 15 million dry van trailers registered to operate in the United States.
Why Are They Called Dry Van Trailers?
Sadly, the reason that these trailers are called dry vans does not have any special story behind the name. They are called dry vans trailers just because they keep your product protected from the elements and road debris.
The most common size for dry van trailers is 53 feet in length. However, there are some trailers that operate that are only 48 feet in length. Shorter dry van trailers are available in 20- and 29-foot sizes. In the industry, these trailers are referred to as “pup trailers.”
Common Items Shipped Via Dry Van Trailers
Dry vans are the most common type of trailer used because they can accommodate such a variety of sizes and types of freight. The most common freight moved on these trailers is palletized.
The most common freight to move in these trailers include:
-General merchandise moving to retailers
-Building products
-Cars or motorcycles that need extra protection during transport
-High-value loads that need extra security
-A product that can be affected by the weather
-Household goods (Moving companies)
-Small machinery or equipment that needs to move by a larger vehicle due to weight or dimensions
Dry vans have a weight limit for the goods that they can carry. The total weight of a truck must not exceed 80,000 pounds when the trailer is filled to remain in compliance with all federal and state laws.
Dry vans do not have any temperature control features, which can limit some of the types of products that are shipped in the trailer. If you have a product that needs to be shipped in a temperature-controlled setting, you will use a type of trailer that is referred to as a “reefer.” Reefers look like dry van trailers in most cases but are equipped with climate control features.
AmeriCargo Trans Dry Vans Are Perfect For Multi-Stop Loads
One of the reasons that many companies like to use dry vans is because they are easy to load for multiple stops. You can load pallets or boxes according to where the stops will be, and the trailer can be easily unloaded. This is a great way for companies to reduce shipping costs by having multiple stops in one trailer.
